A year and a day with one woman at a time.

Naturopathic doctor

Dr. Marlene Hampton

Psyche Opening the Golden Box, John William Waterhouse, 1903

I am a licensed naturopathic physician and professor with fourteen years of clinical practice. I read a woman whole: her labs and her dreams, her mineral chemistry and her lineage, her grief and her physiology, as one continuous text.

I offer one thing. The Threshold Year is a private, year-long container for a woman in the middle of a major life or health transition. For a year and a day I stay beside you through it, reading the whole of you, guiding you, tending you, and holding you to the work, whatever the outcome.

The work is done at distance, by call and by post, so where you live does not matter. I take fewer than ten women a year. Entry is by application and opens quarterly.

If you have been everywhere else first, you are likely in the right place.

Medicine at the

The physician at the threshold

DR. MARLENE HAMPTON

I trained under those who hold the direct lineage to Dr. John Bastyr, the founding father of modern naturopathic medicine, and spent six years as a university professor of the history and philosophy of healing. I trained in Jungian depth work out of Switzerland. I have apprenticed, professionally and at length, in dream work, homeopathy, botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, fertility awareness, quantum biology, shamanic beekeeping, apitherapy, plant spirit medicine, womb work, preconception through postpartum care, and mythology. My medicine weaves all of it into one living practice. That is the training. It is the least interesting thing about why my medicine is potent.

The medicine is potent because I have crossed nearly every threshold I now guide women through. I have lived with a chronic illness since I was nine, which means I have spent my whole life reading a body that will not let me look away from it. I have a traumatic birth in my own history, a C-section under general anesthesia, and two home births after it, so I know both the passage that goes as it should and the one that does not. I survived an abusive relationship and the aftermath that follows one. I found my way back to the love of my life, a boy I had known since kindergarten and lost for sixteen years, through the same dream practices I now teach. I have carried heartache there are no words for, and learned what a body does with grief when it has nowhere to put it.

For eight years I homesteaded on wild land. I woke at four thirty, strapped a baby to my back, and milked the cow and goats before the sun crested the hillside so my children would have the best nourishment I could give them. I have raised animals from birth and slaughtered them with my own hands and set them on my family's table. I grew up in the concrete of New York City and I live now in the southern California backcountry, in fire country, among my hives, on land that does not accommodate softness or error.

I do not treat the body as a machine reporting errors. I read it as a vessel carrying a story, because mine has carried one, and I learned to read it the hard way. I am not a wellness practitioner. I am not a functional medicine doctor. I am not a coach. I am the physician women find when they have run out of alternatives to the truth. There is nothing you could bring into the room that would frighten me. I will tell you what I see, if you want to hear it and if you actually want to change. If not, I will release you with care and without apology.

You are standing at a true crossing. Perimenopause or menopause. Preconception, pregnancy, or postpartum. The illness no one has been able to explain. The grief that rearranged everything. The life that looks intact from the outside and stopped making sense from the inside.

You have worked with the doctors, the specialists, the protocols, the clinics, the therapists, the guides, the retreats. Something in all of it moved. Something essential was never reached. What is missing is not another protocol.

You want the truth, and you have had enough comfortable half-truths delivered with good intentions. You are ready for someone to look directly at what is happening in the body, in the dream, and in the lineage, and name it without flinching and without cruelty.

Everything on this page is stated plainly, because that is how the whole year will be.

You will know quickly whether this is for you.

The THRESHOLD YEAR

I. Your body is a vessel, not a malfunction. It carried you to this door through everything your history contains, and it will be treated as the ally it has been, whatever your lifelong relationship with it has looked like.

II. Symptoms are speech. A symptom is the last language available to a story that was not allowed words, and here we do not silence a messenger before hearing the message. Your suffering will be relieved wherever it can be, and everything that speaks in you will be heard before it is quieted. Much of what is truly heard no longer needs quieting.

III. The dream is a reliable witness. Your dreams are read all year with the same seriousness as your bloodwork, because they are the record kept by the part of you that has never once performed.

IV. The inheritance is real. Some of what you carry was handed to you through wombs, kitchens, and nervous systems: patterns, depletions, endurances, silences. Part of this year is learning what is yours to work and what arrived already spent, and answering honestly what stops with you.

What this work rests on

The philopsophy

The year moves through four phases, each roughly three months, each with its own work and its own weather.

The descent. Months one through three. The opening. Your full story is gathered and read back to you whole: the history, the body, the labs, the first dreams, the mineral map that doubles as a record of inheritance. The ground is opened, and what is ready to fall away begins, quietly, to fall.

The underworld. Months four through six. The deepest passage, named honestly. Shadow work, grief, the parts of you that went into hiding, the symptom asked what it has been protecting. This is the hardest and most alive quarter of the year, and you do not walk it alone.

The emergence. Months seven through nine. Something new takes form and is given structures to live in: light and rhythm as primary medicine, the body re-inhabited, food as an act of belonging. This phase asks for consistency more than courage, and for many women that is the harder discipline.

The return. Months ten through twelve, and the day. The year woven into one story, told aloud and witnessed. The practice that is yours after the container ends, built in your own words. And the crossing back through the door you entered, marked by a closing ceremony and the Witnessing Letter: a full account of who you were when you arrived, what I watched you cross, and who you have become. Women keep this letter for the rest of their lives.

The shape of the year

outline of our time

Twelve monthly sessions of ninety minutes, which are the heartbeat of the year, where the seeing happens and the work moves. Brief integration calls between them, up to twice monthly. A private voice channel to me, open four days a week and answered by me personally, for the moments that cannot wait for a session. Your dreams, submitted monthly and answered in writing. Full laboratory and mineral analysis at the beginning, middle, and end of the year, read as one unfolding story. A living protocol renewed each quarter, covering remedies, minerals, food, light and rhythm, water, and practice.

Then there is what my hands do. I keep bees, and I harvest the honey and the wax myself. I make your candle over flame. I write your letters and seal them with that same wax. I prepare your botanicals and homeopathics by hand, and I choose your talismans and tools one at a time, for you. All of it arrives at your door across the year: a welcome package before we begin, with your companion handbook wrapped and sealed. Four Threshold Letters, one at each turning of the season, each written to you alone about what I see in you at that quarter. Your dream log and tracking instruments. And at the end, the Witnessing Letter.

Unless you are local, I cannot lay my hands upon you. So I send the work of my hands instead. That is not decoration on the medicine. It is part of how the medicine works.

What the year holds

WHAT IS INCLUDED

By the end of the year you will have been read completely, in the body, the dream, and the bloodline, by someone whose seeing you can trust, and you will have heard the truth of what is happening in you, named without flinching.

You will be fluent in your own night language, and that fluency is yours for life. You will know how to read your own labs and minerals as a story rather than a verdict. You will leave with a living practice built in your own words, rooted in your lineage, your body, and your season: not a protocol you follow but a medicine you tend. You leave equipped, not dependent.

You will have crossed the threshold you arrived at, deliberately and completely, and you will hold the Witnessing Letter as the record of it. You will not leave the way you arrived.

Women describe this as the hardest and most beautiful thing they have ever done, and both halves of that sentence are the point. The difficulty is real and it is never softened into something more palatable. The tending is complete and it is never withheld.

Who you become is the gold

what you leave with

You will go into the dark, and you will be held in beauty the entire way.

The year asks for your full participation, and the participation is the medicine. You will keep daily practices, small on purpose, past the point of novelty: the dream journal, the morning temperature, the rhythms we build together. You will prepare honestly before every session, because the preparation determines the depth of what happens in it.

You will be asked to hold boundaries you have let slide, to break habits that have kept you comfortable and small, and to stay inside discomfort long enough for it to finish speaking, rather than reaching for whatever numbs it. There will be weeks that ask more of you than you thought you had. You will change, and change is not always comfortable.

Plan on two to three hours a month with me, and a few minutes most days on your own. Women do this year alongside careers, young children, and illness. It is designed to be lived inside a real life, not instead of one.

I will be beside you for all of it, the way a midwife stays through a birth. I will not do it for you, and I would not insult you by trying. What you build this year is yours precisely because you built it.

What this year will ask of you

a taste

This is not for the woman looking for someone to fix her while she watches. It is not for the woman who needs the work to promise comfort before she will enter it. It is not a substitute for psychotherapy, and it is not crisis care; where those are needed, I will say so directly, and we will put the right support in place. And it is not for every season of life, even for the right woman. If you are not ready, truly ready, I will tell you honestly, and being released at the wrong time is itself a form of care.

Those who are ready, she initiates. Those who are not, she will release.
Both are done with care.

WHO THIS IS NOT FOR

Is this remote? Yes. We meet by video call, and everything physical arrives by post. Women in this year live all over. If you are local to the San Diego area, some of it can happen in person.

What does it cost? The Threshold Year is an investment, in the range of a serious medical or educational commitment rather than a coaching package. The exact figure, and what it includes, is in the guidebook I send when you write to me. I will never put you through a sales call to learn a number.

How much time will it take? Roughly two to three hours a month with me, plus a few minutes most days on your own.

What if I am already working with other doctors? Good. I do not ask you to leave your other care. I read what they find and set it in the larger story, and where a referral is needed I will say so.

What if I need to stop? We talk about it honestly. This is a year and a day, entered deliberately, and I would rather release you well than hold you to a container that stopped being right.

When is the next opening? October 2026.

Common Questions

DIRECT ANSWERS

Entry begins with an application, not a checkout. Write to me and I will send you the guidebook, which includes the full cost, and the application.

I read every application myself and answer personally within five business days. If the work looks right from both sides, I extend the invitation to have a meeting to discuss working together further. If it is not a good fit, I will tell you honestly, and where I can I will point you toward what would serve you better.

How entry works

LET'S BEGIN

Letters at the seasonal thresholds, on the body's language, grief, the dream, the hive, and the living world. This is where most women first find this work, long before they are ready to knock, and where they return for years.
